Why Slate Pool Tables Are The Number 1 Choice

Friday, October 9th, 2009

There are many factors to consider when buying a pool table, whether you’re buying for the home or buying for a bar or other venue. As well as deciding on the most appropriate design, the right frame material, and even the colour of the felt that you wish to use, you will also need to determine whether you want a slate pool table or one using an alternative material. Regulation and professional tables all use slate beds because of the quality but is it a feasible option for the home buyer?

No Question

The pool playing purist will tell you that there is no other option except to buy a slate bed pool table and in many respects they would be correct. The fact is that slate is used primarily because of how flat and strong it is. Even though the slate is often constructed in three parts, a good slate bed will run true and will withstand any use and virtually any abuse you can throw at it. If you consider the fact that pool tables often have people laid out across them to take long shots it is understandable that manufacturers and users continue to rely on slate.

Added Strength

The strength of slate can’t be exaggerated in the case of pool table design. Traditional, old pool tables used slabs of slate as thick as 2” or even 3” thick but this is now considered to be overkill. 1” thick slate is more than ample for the job in hand and by reducing the amount of slate used by half or more it reduces costs and, equally as importantly, it reduces the weight of the table too.

Weight

Pool tables made from hardwood and slate are heavy and they can be very difficult to move so if you intend to move house or change rooms around in the near future you might want to consider waiting before purchasing a slate bed billiard table. However, it is this weight that in part gives the slate its strength.

Long Life

The natural slate that is used in pool table construction has a very long life and as a result this means that slate pool tables typically enjoy a much longer life than wooden or synthetic based pool tables. What’s more, the qualities of the slate mean that throughout its life, the slate bed will continue to provide a flat and true playing surface.

Difficult To Damage

A slate bed does not chip, break, or splinter easily and it will certainly withstand normal and use and even some abnormal use. Liquid spills on a wooden table can be devastatingly damaging, leading to warping of the bed and eventually to an unplayable surface. With slate this is considerably less of a problem; although you should dry the spill as quickly as possible to prevent too much damage to the felt or the wooden frame.

The Ultimate Quality Pool Table Bed

The main reason that players choose slate bed pool tables is the quality, uniformity, and consistency that it offers. Every shot you play will be smooth and exactly as you play it. The ball won’t deviate from its line and you will get a longer run on the balls. If you’ve ever played on a wooden table and a slate table then you will undoubtedly appreciate the discernible differences between the two styles of pool table.

Teak Dining Tables – A Dining Table With Distinction

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

As you create the atmosphere of the rooms in your home, your dining room is going to be focused completely around the table you choose as its centerpiece. That table will make a statement about you, your family, and the meals that are to be enjoyed in this space. If you want an eating surface that will speak to your visitors, and hold up for the many meals it will be serving, you should look into teak dining tables.

Compared to traditional woods such as oak, pine or cherry, teak has a personality all its own. When you first look at teak dining tables you are going to notice the unique look of the grain. The word stunning may come to mind. The grain has the appearance of an exotic wood. In many ways teak dining tables are works of art in themselves because of the beauty of those one of a kind grains in the cuts of wood that make up the tabletop.

When it comes to being able to put up with your family and all the gatherings and meals you’ll be enjoying, teak is as durable and user friendly as any other hardwood. It will put up with year after year of use, and some abuse, and still hold strong through it all. One of the great things about teak dining tables is that they do some of their own maintenance. While with other wooden tables, you have to do a lot of cleaning and polishing and oiling, teak dining tables continue to look beautiful even if you are a little lax with your cleaning duties. The reason for this is that teak dining tables are naturally oiled, as the wood is oil heavy and essentially oils itself. You may be amazed to see how shiny teak dining tables stay even when you haven’t given them the attention you have had to give dining tables in the past.

While many people think of teak dining tables as tables that should be outside for your back yard entertaining, the truth is that teak dining tables have moved inside. Today’s designers and manufacturers have found new and innovative ways to bring that beauty of teak dining tables that once were relegated to the back yard, into the dining room or kitchen.

Though exotic, in appearance, teak has never been more popular as an alternative to traditional woods for dining tables. Once you are ready to create a dining room that is both visually pleasing and strong enough to hold up to the workout you want it to handle as the family comes over to visit, you should start looking into the variety of styles in teak dining room tables. Because of the popularity of the wood, you can find teak dining tables to blend with whatever theme you are planning for your dining room, whether it be rustic, though teak dining tables with less polished edges and finishing touches, to French chateau, where the pieces are all carved with intricate breathtaking details.

Table Refinishing, A Great Way To Stretch Your Furniture Budget

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Table refinishing is a great idea that almost everyone can benefit from, and there are as many kinds and styles of tables as you can possibly think of. Many different kinds and materials to choose from too. There are end tables, dinette tables tilt top tables step tables wood ones metal ones wicker and rattan, Thomas Chippendale tables, Duncan Fife tables too, and Sheridan tables as well, just to name a few, and every one can be refinished several times. By far the most common table to refinish would be a type of classic wooden table.

Trees have been friend of man because they provide Wood a beautiful and renewable resource that has been used for thousands of years. Wood continues to be a great choice and is the material we are focusing on today. Of the millions of wood tables in use today that could be successfully Refinished, many will be discarded for no better reason than their owners don’t know what to do to keep them in good and condition.

In grandpa’s day, the idea of discarding otherwise good stuff just because of issues of wear was unthinkable. Thankfully there has been a movement toward better stewardship and most people have understood how bad the disposable mindset of the eighties and nineties was. When a good table begins to wear and the finish becomes ugly, the worn finish may be removed and another fresh finish can be reapplied, this is what is meant when we speak of refinishing.

The variety of finish colors and glosses are endless. Often through refinishing your table it can take on the appearance of an altogether different table, unrecognizable to most as the previous piece. For example, in the 1960’s the use of early American decor called for an extremely orange color that was commonly used on birch and maple tables. The early American stain became so identified with that period that when the early American phase passed, nobody seemed to want those old orange maple tables, so we refinished hundreds of them.

Then again around 1974 dark pine came into fashion, most people never even noticed that the same tables from the sixties were now being finished and refinished in a color more in keeping with the design trend of the day and millions of tables continued to be sold with almost no design change, the only real difference was the finish color of the wood. In the eighties the trend toward cherry reached it’s apex and furniture colors changed once again.

So it becomes understandable, that when one owns good tables that have become a worn, it makes sense to refinish. Although great tables are available at fine stores today, the old tables typically offer well-seasoned wood, good quality joints and workmanship of a higher quality than most made now, so you should think twice before you decide to spend your hard earned cash for new ones, and you too can enjoy better quality tables for less money than you thought possible if you remember to refinish rather than replace.

Favorite Baby Changing Tables

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Apart from a crib, among the gifts that a kid will receive on his arrival into the world would be garments, linens, and other delicate materials. There would be no better place for these special garments than a cupboard which will be completely for the baby. This cupboard or dresser can be part of his room, or his parent’s room, and if it comes in a beautiful style and material, it can be an aesthetic piece also.

A pleasant touch common on dressers nowadays is the conversion of its top into a changing table for the baby. Children are delicate creatures that need special attention, so changing their nappies or dressing them up should be done with as much safety cares as possible. A changing table can guarantee a baby’s safety while a parent dresses him up lovingly. Placing a changing table over a dresser is a pleasant practical touch.

Purchasing a baby changing table with a dresser, [**] doesn’t mean purchasing a piece of wooden furniture meant for a baby’s use alone. A dresser cum table which is made of attractive and very durable materials can continue to be an ideal cupboard which can stay in a home and in a family’s life for years and generations to come.

There are several common options of changing tables available in the common shops : the wooden tables with guardrails, units that can fold up, and hinged chest adapters.

a separate changing table is usually lighter than a conventional table, and for practicability reasons, some aren’t made of wood. The danger of these kinds of tables, even if they have strong guardrails, is that they can easily topple over. It places the baby at high risk of an accident if the oldsters attend to other stuff even for a minute. A child who is learning to move around his room could also risk harming himself by an unfixed rail, which could fall over a kid when he pokes the table during playtime. Dressing up the baby would be a little more stressful for the parent if the necessary accessories like diapers, linens, shirts, or pins are stored away from the table, in a different part of the room.

Having a baby changing table on top of a sturdy wooden dresser would be the solution to these possible concerns. A low dresser can be created of just the right height for the parent to bend over while changing the child. Since it is attached securely to a heavy piece of furniture, a crawling child may not be able to knock it down or try and grab the rail simply. The firm base of wood would also be more adept at keeping the baby safe and secure while he’s lying down there. And best of all, every linen or accessory the baby wishes could be stored on the dresser’s drawers, so changing time is faster and less confusing for the parent.

It is a good idea to select a baby changing table cum dresser that is made from good strong wood. Aside from the wonderful thing about natural wood, these pieces of furniture are made to last longer than others. Through time, it can become an investment that returns benefits again and again again.

If a kid would decide to have employ a closet for regular garments, his old changing table can become his dresser for his personal garments. The bottom drawers can be for items that are rarely used, or taken out only for important occasions. Kids also need special hiding places for their found treasures during playtime, and these drawers would be ideal for that purpose. The level surface, which used to support his weight, can be utilized now to support his photographs, knickknacks, or any other things that he would care to display in his room.

A baby changing table can be customized according to a parent’s directions, so choose to maximise its dimensions by considering the sizes and the numbers of drawers. Even tho it would seem a little too spacious for baby linens and accessories when it’ll be first purchased and used, it’s going to be better, in the long run, to be able fill it up with bigger garments one by one, rather than to be wanting of dresser space once the baby grows up into a child and wants more garments.

And simply to be sure the baby changing table can truly last long enough to transform into a standard dresser, choose to get one that is made of real, solid hardwood. These wood types, like oak, cherry, or maple, are much more resistant to damage, scratches, and gouges over ordinary or artificial wood. They can support varying weights easily because the dressers would be manufactured to support a baby’s full weight, plus his clothes and accessories. And beyond their function and strength, these wooden dressers are also handmade and crafted with exquisite designs and attractive finishes. They will actually remain as keepsakes long after a baby grows up.

End Tables – From The Egyptians On

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

When you kick back at the end of the day and pop your drink down on that end table of yours as you turn on the TV to see what’s on, you may be in a posture much like King Tut or Cleopatra. It turns out end tables and other table forms go back that far, or further.

While King Tut had a lot of servants, and likely could have had people stand there holding anything he wanted held, even he wanted a surface of his own to put things on. The original end tables, made back in Egyptian times, weren’t what we think of today for end tables. They were pieces of stone stacked to create a flat surface where one could put food or other items. But they did the job. When you wanted to put something down, there was a flat counter to put it on without calling on someone to stand there and hold it.

It seems the Romans also understood the importance of a platform upon which to place things. They created end tables out of stone, as well, although theirs were a little more defined and looked more like altars. It also seems the Romans had more of an interest in lounging at the table than sitting at the table. Their tables were formed much lower than modern day end tables, at a height that would be appropriate if you were lounging back on a couch while placing and retrieving items from the tabletop.

Wood tables came into popularity in the medieval era. They understood the idea of using wood as an eating surface. It was much easier to move than stone, and the wood was readily available. Carpenters of the time created large wooden tables with strong, solid legs to take on the role.

As end tables and other tables continued through history, they came to the new world. Frontier tables and end tables were a far cry from the solid stone pieces that were created in Egyptian and Roman times and the solid wood ones made in the medieval years. No, in the west, you used what you could. Often a table was created out of a flat board being set on top of whatever they could find to balance it. It could be a couple of barrels, some wood blocks, or whatever they could make from the nearby supplies.

Since then tables have gone through many growths and transformations into the endless variety of them that we see on the market today. There are always new kinds being created, like modern and contemporary tables that are as much art as furniture. Additionally, many like the idea of repeating history and are purchasing tables that are being made as reproductions of those pieces of centuries past. There are also now tables for specific uses that never used to exist, from dressing tables to drafting tables.

One thing is for sure, while the world of tables is constantly changing, the need for them will not.

Are Folding Dining Tables a No-No?

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

When society asks, “Are folding dining tables a no-no?” what do you say?

If speaking on behalf of people in the higher echelon of the community, I would say yes. For most people, however, as long as there is purpose on a certain item, why not? Why is there such an issue on buying assembled or compact furniture? This is true especially with folding dining tables. There are many uses of this type of furniture that will outnumber those expensive and elegant looking ones.

First, exactly where do we usually place a folding dining table? It is normally placed against a wall to have a breakfast nook effect. This is most likely seen in smaller houses. When people living here entertain guests, all they have to do is unfold the table so it doubles the size and may accommodate the number of people needing to use it. This is impossible in an expensive glass and alloy table meant for four. Also, when having cocktail parties, it is very easy to hide the table by folding it and transferring it into another room in the house.

Second, it is very useful for picnic trips and barbeques outdoors. You wouldn’t worry if you still have a place left to use during peak seasons like the 4th of July or New Year’s Eve.

Finally, when friends do come over, it is the perfect furniture to be used for activities because you can just drag it wherever you want without the usual heaviness of a regular table.

Over the last few years, plastic or PVC folding tables have really turned out to be the table of choice for numerous reasons. They are lighter than particleboard and plywood which make them easier to be moved around. They are also more durable since they can be dropped and not have a compressed corner like wooden tables. They won’t go out of shape because of humidity and they are perfect for indoor and outdoor use.

There are a lot of uses with the folding table. Here are some usual examples:

• Dinner table
• Gift table for parties
• Craft table
• For playing cards
• Picnics
• A small garage sale stand
• Breakfast nook
• Portable table for outings

Choosing your tables can be complicated. As dimension is the most significant aspect, keep in mind that the smaller the chair, the larger the seating capacity will be around a table. Seating capacity depends on the bulk of the person and the size of the chair. On the other hand, determining how the table will be used can also determine the amount of room that each person will need.

When you are buying folding tables, always keep in mind that you will be using it for long term use. Choose one with sturdy legs and avoid ones with mobility wheels. They help in lessening the life span of your furniture. Make sure that the value equals its price. Do a research on other types of folding dining tables before making a purchase. You will never know what options you have unless you look for information.
